Schloss Schönborn "Pfaffenberger" Riesling Spatlese 2004

The history of the von Schönborn family can be traced back to the crusades, and the first mention with respect to viticulture was in the year 1349. This makes the Schloss Schönborn the oldest estate in Germany, and one of the oldest in the world, having been owned by the same family for 27 successive generations. Some deep historical digging reveals documents which track the purchase of hand blown glass bottles back to 1725, which means that the Schönborns were among the first estates ever to bottle their wines. Their oldest known wine, that remains drinkable to this day, is in fact the 1735 Johannisberger which was auctioned in the late 1980s to one very lucky wine collector.Over their very long run, the estate has continued to grow, now owning more than 50 hectares (125 acres) of vineyard throughout the Rheingau region. It is the only estate in that region to own more than 35 single vineyard holdings, all of which are located in the best part of the Rheingau. The Schönborn’s have one of the deepest "rarities cellars" in the world, still with a number of bottles of three separate vintages from the 1700’s remaining. For over 660 years, the family has maintained sustainable vineyard practices, and strive to bring true quality to each of their world-class wines. This structured, mineral-tinged Riesling of 2004 is now reaching the beginning of their true maturity. Luscious peach and white cherry flavors meld seamlessly with honey and a hint of savory mushroom. A full-bodied and truly exceptional dry Riesling.
