"GSM: Deconstructed" Enfield Edition

You'll often hear wines made in the Southern Rhone, or wines in the Southern Rhone style, referred to as GSM blends. GSM stands for "Grenache-Syrah-Mourvedre," the three most common blending grapes in these wines (though you'll often find a splash of Carignan and Cinsault, among others). Each of these grapes plays a part in the fine-tuning of these world-famous wines: Grenache adds aromatics and fruit, Syrah adds structure, spice and acidity, and Mourvedre adds power and an animal hide/sauvage quality to balance the fruitiness of the Grenache. But we think the best way to understand the properties of each of these grapes is to enjoy them in their single-varietal form. Luckily for you, one of our favorite California wineries, Enfield Wine Co., has your "G," your "S," and your "M" covered in their purest, "varietally correct" expressions. We recommend saving a sip at the end of each bottle and blending a glass of your own GSM.
