Malbec, a thin skinned grape, originally from France was only thought of as a blending grape, but in Argentina this grape has found a home and is one of the most exciting New World wines being produced today. The sun in South American trasforms this grape from a once weak wine into a powerful juicy masterpiece.

There is so much to learn about what is arguably the most famous wine region in the world, that we have split it up into two fascinating classes! The first session, led by Chris Campbell and Michele d'Aprix, will cover the "Right Bank" of the massive Gironde Estuary. There, a completely unique set of soil types promote the growth of Merlot and Cabernet Franc grapes, creating its own specific Bordeaux style. While history has given more attention to the Chateaux that lay on the other side, right bank Bordeaux represent the entire spectrum from pleasing, everyday wines to some of the world's most expensive labels. Chris and Michele will explain the history of the region, its uniqueness, and how to find the perfect right bank Bordeaux for your next meal.

Bordeaux Part Two: The Medoc - Saturday, March 10, 2012

The Medoc is the name of the region that encompasses some of the best smaller appellations in Bordeaux. Paulliac, Margaux, St-Estephe, and St. Julien all have their home in this area of Bordeaux. The Cabernet grape is king here and gives the wines from this area a bold flavor. This area is also a fantastic wine region for value. Most of the wines grown in the general regions of the Medoc are fantastic and won't break the bank! Originating from a ancient tradition of topping a glass with a slice of bread to prevent unwanted guests from flying into the wine, tapas have emerged from humble bodegas in Spain to become perhaps the most influential culinary trend of the last 50 years. Palo Cortado, a relatively recent addition to the local dining scene, has brought gorgeous, inspired interpretations of classic tapas to Court Street. Chef Jimmy Stafford visits to prepare some of his favorite small plates and bites, matching them up with formidable blancos and tintos from the Iberian peninsula.
